Starting at the entrance to our farm at the head of the harbour, we’ll walk towards the harbour’s edge through our ‘Natura 2000 SAC lands’, learning all about the plants and wildlife that make this a Special Area of Conservation.
Opposite Goleen Outer Pier, we’ll stop for a minute to view the tiny field where early potatoes were once grown and learn a little bit about how our Parish of Kilmore was so badly affected by the plight of the Great Famine.
Looking South to the iconic Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, referred to as ‘the teardrop of Ireland’ by those forced to emigrate from its shores, we’ll pause to reflect on the arduous journey taken by Irish emigrants, in search of a better life, in America, the UK, Australia and Canada.
Continuing along the cliff path, we’ll stop in the field above Castle Strand that was once the site of an O’Mahony Tower House, Desmond Castle; here you’ll learn a little bit about the history of the clan, and how at least two of the Chieftains chose it as their base.
As we relax a while perched high up on the edge of the cliffs, looking out at the awe-inspiring, natural and unspoiled scenery around us, Melanie will take us on a guided meditation that uses the relaxing sights, sounds, and smells of nature, to help us reconnect with our minds and bodies.
Next, you’ll get to meet our beautiful, friendly rare breed Connemara ponies, along with our Irish Cob and Irish Sport Horse, before making our way back to base through our emerging Native Woodland and Nature Reserve, with more than a dozen different trees species.
