How to build a Sauna

Goleen Harbour is a stunning 38 acre eco-accomodation, education and activity centre located just 2 minutes from the village of Goleen in West Cork near Mizen head. Ethos: In keeping with our ethos of sustainability we run gather and learn workshops.  These courses teach participants life skills that are needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society. They are about all of us having and sharing the knowledge, abilities, and values to live in, help develop, and support a sustainable society. We also like to have a bit of fun and enjoy working and learning together in a structured, friendly and social setting.

Course description

Dates: 23rd-25th February & 1st-3rd March

We have a unique design to be constructed from three post and beam frames with timber frame  infills wrapped in Corten steel. It will be positioned near the sea to provide health and relaxation to it’s guests and the wider community of West Cork.

The course itself will be held over two consecutive long weekends in which participants can attend one or both.

Each weekend will have a maximum of 12 participants to allow for everyone to get a go at all elements/skills of the build and also one on one instruction and guidance.

The Goleen Harbour Sauna in keeping with our eco sustainable ideals will tread lightly on the earth being hung off rock above our private swimming inlet with just 3 pad stone foundations.

Weekend 1  – Build of 3 post and beam frames with stick frame infills.

Participants will benefit from learning:
• Post & beam construction techniques
• Timber frame closed panels
• Fitting doors and windows etc.
• Fitting a weatherproof membrane, battening and cladding

Weekend 2 –  Review of week ones work and completion of build and sauna fit out.

Participants will benefit from learning:
• Interior cladding
• Bench construction
• Interior finishing
• Stove & flu installation and commissioning

Cost: €395 for 3 days or €650 for 6 + booking fee

Teachers:

Johnny Callaghan – Donegal born and West Cork resident Johnny Callaghan has over 20 years experience as not only an artist and horticulturists but as a design and construction expert and teacher in  Outdoor timber educational spaces and playgrounds as well as  contemporary, traditional and unique timber structures for schools, local authorities and residential. Specialising in post and beam design and sustainable and locally sourced and hand crafted construction.

 

Matt Mills – Co-founder of Goleen Harbour and founder of EcoCabin,  Matt is an experienced multi discipline designer who has a passion for green building. His experience spans funding, planning permission, design and construction. Matt uses locally sourced materials, to minimise environmental impacts wherever possible, achieving a contemporary design esthetic whilst maximising building performance, working with nature not against it.

 

A lunch each day will be provided each day with organically grown ingredients from our farm and other local suppliers.

A 20% lifelong discount on sauna use for all participants and their friends/family.

Accommodation:
