Land Experiences

Life on the Edge

A guided walk starting at our entrance at the head of the harbour, you’ll walk towards the harbour’s edge through our Natura 2000 SAC lands learning about which plants and birds make it a Special Area of Conservation. Opposite Goleen outer pier, we will stop to view the tiny field where early potatoes were once grown. We will learn a little about how our parish of Kilmore was so badly affected by the ‘potato’ Famine. Looking South to the iconic Fastnet Rock lighthouse, named “the teardrop of Ireland” by those forced to leave these shores. We’ll pause to reflect on the journey taken and the reasons why. Walking on along the cliff path we’ll come into the field above Castle Strand that was the site of an O’Mahony Tower House, Desmond Castle once said to have “cut the clear blue sky with it’s embattled loftiness”, touching on the history of the clan and how at least 2 of the Chieftans chose it as their base. We’ll learn about its strategic position enabling easy ‘taxing’ of passing ships, linking us to the fact that the area was once one of the largest and most important Pirate bases in Europe and about William Hull the “King of the Pirates”.  Here on the edge, where the land meets the sea, Melanie will take us on a guided meditation that re-connects us with our bodies and natures elements.

We’ll meet our Irish rare breed Connemara Ponies often with their foals along with our Irish Cob and Irish Sport Horse. Then well make our way back through our emerging Native Woodland and Nature Reserve with more than a dozen different tree species before returning back to our entrance at the head of the harbour.
